After a single bite of Coq au Vin, Dani apologized to Ms. Nora, and excused herself from the dinner table. If only she could fall asleep and wake with a different perspective, she thought. But it proved to be impossible. Restless and burdened with guilt, she only stared at the ceiling, cursing herself repeatedly while the minutes passed like hours.

Dani needed to get out, get some air. She decided a drive might help, and at first the cool wind rushing around her face was a nice distraction. But after looping around the neighborhood for the third time, Dani finally pulled over to a 7-Eleven and picked up a bottle of Jim Beam to quiet her thoughts. Then she parked near the iconic Tower Bridge and got herself properly drunk on the bank of the Sacramento River.

Had Dani not been so angry with herself, she would have marveled at the incredible nightscape in front of her. If he had an inner shadow, perhaps he’d been able to keep his under control, living by a strict moral code that was deeply rooted in his faith. For the most part, Harrison had lived an exemplary life, frequently working seven days a week when, financially speaking, he didn’t have to work at all. Harrison wasn’t perfect, of course. But the worst he could be accused of was being human.

Her mother, on the other hand, seemed to be the obvious person from whom she may have inherited her dark side. She was the bad seed, serving time in prison for attempted murder and a long list of other not-so-violent crimes. But it felt too easy to lay the blame solely on her mother. And Dani wasn’t really looking to blame anyone. She simply wanted answers about herself, and that might be possible if she knew her mother’s history. Aside from her crimes, Dani knew very little about her, how her
