The Chungnan Mountains
Tâai-i nearly touching the Citadel of Heaven
Chain of hills down to the edge of the sea
White clouds closing over the distance
Blue haze â nothing comes into view
The central peak transforms the whole tract
Dark and light the valleys, each way distinct â
If I want a lodging for the night here
Across the river thereâs a woodman I may ask.
Tâai-i and the Citadel of Heaven are stars as well as a mountain and the imperial capital respectively. The whole tract refers not only to an area of land but also to the stars above it, which control it climatically and so on.
