IN A DRY TIME

My crops were dying in the field.

The dog days seemed to never end.

I’d wait and curse and pray but still

nothing but the well bucket fell.

Soon it would scrape bottom. By then

my crops would stand dead in the field.

September came in dry as hell.

The sun never blinked, no hint of a wind.

I’d pray and curse and pray but still

not even Jesus Christ could heal

dirt turned to dust, scorched roots. By then

my crops were standing dead in the field.

I had no harvest to pay my bills,

so tried for another loan and when

the bank said sorry I begged but still

it did no good, though my eyes filled

with water, too little water to mend

broken crops dead in the field.

I left crop rows for rows of steel.
