Hives

Hives—rashlike skin bumps that can drive kids (as well as their parents) crazy with itching—are often a symptom of food allergy. You can stop the itching with essential oils, but you should also address the dietary cause of the problem. Wash the skin with an aromatherapy wash and/or use an herbal poultice.

Hives Skin Wash

If you do not have elderflower or calendula to make the tea, use plain water. This wash can be applied warm or cold, depending on what feels better. If the area looks very red, cold water will reduce the inflammation.

2½ cups water

¼ cup chopped elderflower or calendula flowers

3 tablespoons baking soda

8 drops lavender

2 drops German chamomile

Bring the water to a boil and pour it over the elderflowers. Steep for 15 minutes, then strain out the solids. Stir in the baking soda and essential oils. Soak a soft cloth or skin sponge in the solution while stirring to keep the oils distributed in the water. Apply the cloth or sponge to irritated skin. Keep the water in a jar in the refrigerator. Reapply often until itching is alleviated.
