the top of heaven

like walking

ocean floor?

Too much

beauty

this world.

Wind beckoning

you

to sing.

Love Poem for Nusaybah’s Hijab

Cloudflesh gaped and skies above

Uhud revealed the moon’s kneecap.

Survivors crawled among the dead,

eyes salivating. Your cotton hijab,

caught in windmoans, spelled a threnody

in Arabic while an angel towed the moon

across the sky. Behind you, mountains

flexed muscled limbs, shadows were pubic

patches. Yet no stare claimed your body.

Pupils slithered down your cotton veil, scrambling

for a form to fix you. Even I can’t write

your hair, each tress a bridge to heaven’s

door, although I gather fallen strands

which curl their English cursive.
