I lay in a puddle of my own drool when I woke to the phone ringing. I didn’t know the time, but it looked dark. I didn’t think I’d been asleep long enough to be dreaming.

“Phone.” Miguel shook me gently. “Baby, phone.”

“Hello?” I answered.

“You turned your cell off,” Roman accused me.

“I’m busy,” I said, still half-asleep.

“Listen to me,” he said. “I need you to focus!”

I sat upright and swung my legs over the edge of the bed, because I heard a seriousness in Roman’s voice I had never heard before. He normally took everything in stride, especially things he shouldn’t. When most people panic, Roman remained detached or cracked a highly inappropriate joke.

“What’s wrong?” Miguel asked me.

I put my hand over the mouthpiece. “Just a second.”

“There’s been an accident,” Roman continued.

“Are you okay?” My voice conveyed the concern I experienced with every fiber of my being. My stomach felt like it dropped from the top of a twelve-story building, splattering on the pavement.

“Can you get to Pleasant Lake Animal Hospital?” he asked.

“What happened?” Alarm resonated in my tone. Something happening to Roman would be unfortunate. Animal being in an accident would be a catastrophe. My heart became involved. It pounded so loud I couldn’t hear Roman’s words.

“Do you have a way down here?” he yelled.

My head spun. I’d already started getting dressed, and Miguel did, too, without a word from me. “I’ll be right there.” I hung up. “Pleasant Lake Animal Hospital.”

He put his hand on my shoulder. “I’ll start the truck.”
