Relief didn’t seem an adequate word to describe the feeling that ran through me when I saw her walk back through the treeline with my brother and that was before I’d even noticed how relaxed her body was. The rigidness that had held her captive when she’d ran was nowhere to be found.

She froze momentarily when she saw us all watching their return. Her unusual, violet-blue eyes shimmered with a glaze that could only come from a high and she trailed my brother as he jogged over to us. I wasn’t watching him though; my eyes were only for her.

Bringing out her boom box was a brave move, one that could have backfired astronomically, and I was still second guessing my decision when I handed it to her. I’d snuck into her bedroom a few nights after she’d first disappeared and stole it. I played that CD on repeat, the last one she had listened to. For too long I locked myself in my bedroom and played it every single fucking night. Some might think I was crazy, that I’d lost my damn mind, my dad certainly did. But in the days, shit, the months following her disappearance, it was the only way I could sleep. In some messed up way it was like I still had a piece of her with me as I closed my eyes each night.

It was a risk allowing her to know I’d kept it all these years and, the closer I got to her, the more I was considering turning around and taking it back inside the cabin. But the happy wonder shining in her eyes hit me like a punch to the gut and I knew I’d made the right call.

I had spent the night watching my friends, watching her, as they fucked around and got lost in various bullshit conversations like they hadn’t a care in the world. I knew the moment that I commanded their attention, I was going to pour a torrential rain down on their happy parade. I wasn’t sure how much longer I could sit here and not relay Gio’s orders to them. They’d been passing joints and beers around with abundance and, if I didn’t do it soon, then those fuckers were going to be too intoxicated to remember any of it come morning.

My gaze once again landed on my Dragonfly, her tiny body lounging back in the garden chair across the fire from me like it was too much of an effort for her to hold her body up. Tate and Lucas flanked her, and my brother sat at her feet, the three of them hovering and looking at her like she might disappear before their eyes should they look away. An amused half smile graced her lips at something my brother just said to her, her eyes sparkling beneath heavy lids. One of her arms was draped above her head and her fingers twisted one of her manic curls and the other arm rested over her flat stomach.
