It’s midnight by the time everyone retires. I stay up long enough to ensure Leila is seen safely to her room and that Carlos is stationed just outside before I make my way to mine.

The first thing I do when I step inside and shut the door is pull out my phone and dial Santos. I’ve been anxious to get this call over with since my encounter with Francisco.

“Damn, cabron,” Santos greets. “I just saw you a few days ago. You ready to see me so soon?”

He’s referring to the performance Leila had in Durango a few days ago. Santos had come into town on personal business. I allowed him to take over the penthouse I rented for a few days while he resolved some matters.

“I ran into an old friend of ours at Victor Alameda’s house,” I say.

“Who?”

“His brother, Francisco. The judge from Chihuahua. You might remember him.”

“They’re brothers?” he asks. “Mierda, I didn’t make that connection.”

It doesn’t surprise me. Alameda isn’t that uncommon of a last name. Especially with one having ties in Chihuahua, where the Diablos reside, while the other is in Durango.

“He’s here at Alameda’s hacienda,” I inform him. “He came specifically to make a request.”

“What?”

“He wants me to convince you to let him through your territory.”

As expected, Santos laughs. “Pinche cabron. I already told him no. What? Is he deaf, or does he have a death sentence?”

“Neither,” I say. “You might recall the number of incidents he cleared for the Diablos.”

“He was paid for that.”

“But he kept records. That’s why he’s not afraid. If you don’t give him what he wants, he’ll make sure you and half of the Diablos end up in prison.”

“What, are you telling me I should cave?” he asks with disbelief.

“No, asshole. I’m asking what the fucker did that you’re denying him, so that I know how to handle your problem for you.”

“It’s not a mess I made this time, cabron.” He bristles at my mention of fixing it for him because that’s been my job for years.

First, it was teaching Santos everything about being a Diablo. Then, it was cleaning up his messes, because he’s impulsive. A bull in a china shop.

“So what is it then?” I ask him.

“We suspect him of sex trafficking. We don’t have the proof yet to make the kill. I have to be sure before I put out a hit. Whatever he’s doing, if he is, he’s staying on the outskirts of my territory.”

I peer out the window, aware that out there in the inky darkness, there lurks monsters doing worse than anything we could ever have done. But he’s right. An order to end a life is just murder if it’s an innocent one, no matter that he’s a piece of shit.

“Then make the deal and get the proof,” I tell him. “I’ll even kill him for you.”

“You wouldn’t mind?” he asks sarcastically.

My lips curve up. “It would be my pleasure.”
