“KATI DENNIS?”

The nurse, a slightly overweight, buxom woman with chocolate-colored skin, poked her head into the waiting area, her face expectant. Kati stood, waving her mom back into her seat, and followed the nurse down the hallway to an exam room.

“Dr. Bottari will be right with you,” she said, shutting the door.

Kati seated herself on the paper-wrapped table, a frown forming on her face. This was ridiculous. Though she’d suggested it, she knew she was pregnant and could have taken a home test to prove it. But perhaps it was just as well she’d come because she’d have to have some sort of care in the long term, and Dr. Bottari could recommend someone.

The time grew long and the silence thick. Then a rustle came from outside the door. The knob jiggled and the doctor entered. Young and attractive, he was not what you expected from a gynecologist. That had thrown her off the first time she’d seen him. But his professionalism had put her immediately at ease. He was inherently nice and did his job well.

“Miss Dennis,” he said. He read over the note clipped to her folder then dropped it on the nearby counter with a thunk. “You think you’re pregnant.”

Kati ducked her head. “That happens when you have no morals.” She sounded bitter, and when she looked up, realized he’d heard it that way. She should have kept her mouth shut.

He crossed his arms, his coat sleeves shortening to display a crisp pin-striped shirt. “We’ll give you a test to confirm it,” he said, not commenting on her remark, “and set you up for follow-up care. Dr. Feinstein is an excellent obstetrician.”

“Tell me, Doc,” she said. “You’re a nice guy, a father.” He had pictures of him and his daughter everywhere in his office, an adorable little blonde pixie who stole your heart with one glance.

Dr. Bottari smiled.

“Why can’t you see me?”

Releasing his grip on himself, he straightened. “My wife asked me that when I met her.”

Curious, Kati didn’t reply.

“She came in here pregnant with a baby that she wanted but hadn’t asked for, and I had to look at her and admit I was afraid.”

“Why?”

He spoke frank. “Delivering babies terrifies me.”

“But ... but that’s your job.”

He waved a hand to a picture of his daughter. “That little girl is my job. She’s not physically mine, but she’s mine in here.” He patted his chest. “I love her more than I can believe possible. Her conception was ugly and unplanned, for both of us, but that doesn’t change how we feel about her.”

Kati didn’t ask what had happened. It was none of her business, but her estimation of him raised a notch or two.

“What if it was beautiful but unplanned?” she asked. “What if people tell me what I did was wrong and condemn me for it? What then?”

He shifted his feet, his stance widening. “Most people condemn others for what they haven’t gone through. That’s human nature. I’m here to see you are physically healthy and get you on the road to delivering a healthy child.
