Solar Returns

Your solar return is a yearly chart calculated for the minute the Sun returns to its natal position. Describing your energies and your orientation during any given year, the solar return is a powerful tool for understanding how your natal chart unfolds; it clarifies the meaning of transits and progressions and reveals significant influences which these transits and progressions may fail to indicate.

One of the most helpful uses of the solar return is as a guide to channeling the energies of natal aspects. Look to the planets in square and opposition in your natal chart, especially those involved in your t-square. What is their relationship in your solar return? The years in which your solar return contains close conjunctions (or trines or sextiles) between two planets in square or opposition natally are years in which you can experience these planets operating constructively together. With the conjunction in particular, you may learn lessons that help you to resolve the dilemmas denoted by your t-square.

Where in your solar return chart is the focal planet of your natal t-square? Here, by sign and house, you must apply its energies. If on an angle, in its own sign or house, or in its natal sign, house or degree, its influence will be powerful throughout the year.

What happens to the sign and house of your natal empty space, and to the rulers of its sign and house? If either ruler is strongly positioned in your solar return, this will he a year for developing its characteristics. If your solar return contains planets in the sign or house of your natal empty space, these planets can help you to overcome the deficiencies denoted here.

Are the focal planet and empty space ruler6 of your natal chart in aspect in your solar return? If in opposition or square, you will experience conflict between them but will be motivated to integrate them. If in conjunction, sextile or trine, such integration may occur easily, but you will need to be aware of how it occurs if you are to continue to express these planets together harmoniously when your solar return year ends.

If you have a t-square in your solar return, it will not be as significant or as potent as your natal t-square, but it will operate in a similar fashion. Note where the focal planet of this t-square occurs natally. Its natal influence will be channeled through the solar return sign and house. You will overemphasize that planet, sign and house during the year, and will need to develop the solar return empty space, integrating it with the focal planet position.

Lunar returns, monthly charts calculated for the minute the Moon returns to its natal position, are interpreted like solar returns; they also indicate periods of time (months) in which you may most successfully integrate t-square planets. Lunar returns are particularly useful tools for people who have the Moon emphasized natally—as a focal planet, on an angle, or in its own sign or house.
