Quarter-Square Triangle Four-Patch

75˝ × 75˝ (c. 1890)

This quilter used a basic pattern to create a quilt full of mourning prints. It reminded me of the loss of my husband and the etiquette requirement that I wear black for at least a year. Some of the quarter-square triangles are pieced, which could be a repair or relate to frugality. As if the pieces were not small enough, she pieced the pieces. The back gives us another clue to her nature. She didn’t quite have enough fabric for the back. But rather than cut up such a large piece of fabric, which would have shown wealth, she chose to frugally piece one corner.

Notice the pink sashing and cornerstones. The back is primarily of one fabric; yet it has also been pieced with one rectangle added in one corner.
