âI walk in the night of the suburban street,â Ãlvaro de Campos
Frontotemporal Streetcar
for Rachel Levitsky
Once upon a time there was someone. A person. Someone male or female. Maybe neither, but probably not. But maybe. They had a name, but not a name that would help you figure out the male or the female. If there was a gender. This someone lived in a place. The someone (and the place) might have been real, or maybe a made-up person and place. This person could be based on someone from a time in history but then changed into a fictional character by this story. The someone lived in a place on Earth, because who the hell knows whatâs out there. Even when people make things up about other planets, they are really writing about this one, because they havenât really gone to another world, not even on a lot of drugs. Plus the universe is boringâmostly a vacuum, with a bunch of rocks scattered around, some of them on fire, and a whole lot of very harmful chemicals. Now, this someone had a kind of money thing. Maybe they were rich. Or poor, and maybe one or the other caused a problem. A big problem. But maybe a small one, since death of one kind or another is the only real big problem. The person was a prince, maybe, or a princess, a royal someone without a gender, or possibly the child of a fishmonger. Or a street urchin, or a little match girl. One of those. They couldâve been older though, and maybe a king or an innkeeper or just a regular middle-class business owner. But that sounds too old-timey. This could be happening now, this story. Or tomorrow. One day, something happened to the someone in the place. It changed everything. Now everything is different. Can you feel that, how all things have changed?
