After that first time, I go to her flat in the sky almost every time she asks, which is about every other morning for more than a month. We sit at the kitchen table with the view of Chicago and the lake spread out down below, eating eggs with jelly and cream cheese, and sometimes things like French toast, drinking coffee and teaching each other everything we know about politics and getting along with people. Down at work, my boss calls me in and tells me I should take some free time settling into the office I get in the Eleventh Ward Democratic Headquarters just across the street from Schaller's Pump. I'm being given special privileges and I ain't complaining.

O'Meara offers to sublet the offices he's had for hisself in a building just around the corner but I tell him I don't want to be taking on any extra expense until I get my feet on the ground and know what I'm going to need.

My new office ain't much bigger than the one I had in Janet's storefront but it's all me and Mabel really need.
