Alondra studied the detective as he was reading. If his theory was correct, the contents were all about her and her natural family. She realized that in addition to everything he had already done, that he was prepared to travel halfway across Europe on her behalf. She felt a sudden swell of emotion, not merely gratitude but affection for the man who was prepared to do so much, go to so much trouble, all for her. Was this love? Was that how it started?

If Mike was right, why was she not more eager to return to what he believed to be her own family? How come she felt so ambivalent about them? She realized with something of a shock that the only time she had felt totally secure, comfortable and relaxed, had been the few days she’d spent at Smelt Mill Cottage. The fact that she considered her stay to be too short should have told her something, had she been able to reason matters out more rationally.

As she watched Nash, she wondered about him. She guessed he had been involved with a number of women besides Daniel’s mother. Yet it seemed there was no one in his life at present. Indeed, Daniel, with disarming innocence, had intimated as much. Why? If Mike was ready to go to so much trouble for her, the very least she could do was to agree to attempt the flight. The idea terrified her, and she felt nausea rising, the acid taste of bile in her throat. She slipped quietly out of the room, unnoticed, reached the bathroom and retched.
