123. Eighteen-cylinder 2,000-hp Pratt & Whitney R-2800’s being readied for installation in F4U “Corsairs” at Vought’s Stratford, Connecticut, plant. The exhaust system of this engine was unique in that it utilized the energy of the exhaust gases, including their jet effect, for propulsion. Six separate exhaust manifolds (seen on the engine at the left), each serving three cylinders, discharged the exhaust backwards under the fuselage and created at full throttle a force equal to an additional 210 hp and an extra 20 mph. The Corsair thus showed the first application of the jet-thrust principle in a radial, air-cooled high-performance aircraft. (Photo: National Air and Space Museum.)
