Chapter 11

Josie was in the dining room after work the next day, spreading the felt puzzle board across the table when her grandpa walked through the door from his office.

“I asked the package delivery firm that brought the picture a couple of weeks ago if they delivered the mailing tube on Saturday,” Grandpa said.

“And did they?”

“Yes. They are checking their records to see if the same person requested the delivery. Haven’t heard back yet.”

“Thanks, Grandpa.”

“Need some help with these?” Grandpa asked, pointing to the pictures Josie had taken out of her backpack.

“Sure. I need to divide the pictures back into the segments of people and no people. The kittens kinda messed up my sorting last night while I was checking the mailing tube. Guess that was their way of getting back at me for leaving for the weekend.”

Grandpa smiled. “Not surprised. They are a mischievous pair. I heard little feet running up and down the stairs all night Saturday. Think they checked out every inch of my place.”

Laughing at the mental image of the little kittens exploring Grandpa Stew's big house, Josie handed him a stack of pictures. “For you. Any you find of Brandi, set to the side. The rest need to go into a persons-unknown pile, a pure-scenery pile, and a pile with an object of some kind in it. Thanks for helping.”

His eyes sparkling with amusement, Grandpa replied, “Hmmm, not sure how I volunteered. I merely asked if you needed help,”

“Uh, okay,” Josie said, starting to reach for the photos back, until she looked at her grandpa’s face. The reach then changed to a tiny swat on the arm. “Stop it, Grandpa, and get to work.”

“You’re going to have to wait for your beverage if I help sort these,” Grandpa teased, indicating the pictures in his hand.

“That’s okay. I’ll wait.”

With her grandpa’s help, Josie made short work of separating the photos into her designated piles. Once they had finished, Grandpa Stew went into the kitchen.

“Be back later with your dinner and a drink,” Grandpa said as he walked through the door.

Josie put the pictures of Brandi into age order, this time including the ones where another person was with her. Unsettled by the haunting look in the young girl’s eyes, Josie thought, we have to find her and bring her home to her father.

By the time Josie’s grandpa came back into the dining room with a Corona in his hand, she had put all the pictures without people into groupings. The remaining people pictures were laid out in a row.

“Looks like you are getting these organized,” Grandpa Stew said. “Any clues yet?”

“No, other than an urgent desire to help Baxter find Brandi. Look at her empty expression and the void in her eyes in these last few pictures,” Josie answered. Then, seeing the beer in her grandpa’s hand, she said, “Must be burger night.”

“Maybe…”

A few minutes later Grandpa placed a plate in front of her. “It’s sloppy joe night with Lucas’ twist on the filling. Sweets, Treats, and Eats customers have been raving about them.
