White Balancing

The color of the subject you are shooting can be affected by different lighting conditions, which the camera may not compensate for. Human eyes and the brain can work with wide range of lighting conditions. Digital cameras will need a manual setup process to calculate the lighting mode suitable for the occasion.

White balancing is the removing of unnecessary color casts from your photo frame to make objects retain their natural colors. This is done by adjusting the color temperature from the source of light. Color temperature is the relative coolness or warmth in a white light.

Incorrect white balancing with your Nikon camera will result into color casts on the photos such as blue, yellow, reds and in some cases green casts. You can try the automatic white balancing in occasions when lighting conditions are not uniform. Relying on the camera’s automatic white balance may have undesired effects if the camera cannot correctly choose it.

The manual white balancing include programmed presets such as daylight, flash, cloudy, shade, florescent, PRE and Kelvin color temperature. There are three ways of achieving white balance feature in a Nikon camera. You can reach the quick setting screen by pressing Info Edit button once if the screen is already visible. Highlight the white balance and press okay button. Choose your preferred white balance setting and press OK to apply.

You may still use the shooting menu option where you will also have the access to other settings related to white balancing. Set the Fn button located on the sides of the camera body to automatically switch to white balancing. To apply a specific white balancing setting, use the command dial to pass through the available options. Doing this will change the default settings of the Fn button.

To shoot in a traditional household bulb environment, manually choose incandescent option. The PRE option allows you to use a white card and compare the actual color of the card to your camera’s display. With this option selected, hold a white card in front of the lens before pressing the shutter button. The camera will read and adapt the color temperature settings for the white color. This is mostly suitable in areas with mixed lighting conditions.
