8Getting There & Away

Silay airport is approximately 10 minutes away from the city proper. A van will cost P50.

Both buses and jeepneys travel between Silay and Bacolod ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ) (P14, 30 minutes). In Silay, all buses and jeepneys heading north and south stop along Rizal St.

From Silay, there are buses all day stopping at the coastal towns towards San Carlos ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ) (P130, three hours).

Sagay

Near the northern tip of Negros is Sagay City, which is actually two cities: New Sagay on the National Hwy, and Old Sagay on the coast, 5.5km away (P9 by tricycle). The city is best known as the guardian of the 32,000-hectare Sagay Marine Reserve , established in 1999. For visitors, highlights are the 200-hectare Carbin Reef (P100 entry), about 15km northeast of Old Sagay (20 minutes by bangka), and Suyac Island (P20 entry), where you can walk an elevated 400m bamboo boardwalk and kayak through the mangroves (P300).

To organise a boat, ask at the tourist office (%488 0649; [email protected]; City Hall, New Sagay). Failing that, ask at the pier. A small boat will cost P1200 (maximum 10 people). Snorkelling equipment (P300) can be arranged at the tourist office (it's too shallow to dive). You'll see different species of giant clam, but fish are scarce indeed. Not so at Museo Sang Bata Sa Negros (%457 8003; www.fb.com/museosangbatasanegros; Old Sagay Port; admission adult/child P40/20; h8am-5pm), an interactive marine museum near the Old Sagay port, where on certain weekends children dressed up as reef animals narrate the exhibits. This is utterly heartwarming and not to be missed.

The tourist office can also help organise accommodation in town. Avoid the government-run Balay Kauswagan, a characterless convention centre with dirty rooms and no restaurant.

Ceres buses run regularly to Cadiz (P16, 30 minutes) and Escalante (P9, 15 minutes). From Cadiz there is a ferry service to Bantayan Island (P200, four hours) every other day or so, normally at 10am, but check at the port. For a safer and smoother ride choose a ferry over a bangka.
