Kennedy dozed on his shoulder. She didn’t make it twenty minutes into the movie before nodding off, her body sagging against his, her arm wrapped over his chest.

His mom glanced their way, a smile on her face. Corey tried to ignore it. Not like he could shift without waking her up, and evidently, she was tired. Besides, he liked her there. But having her so close made him think things he hadn’t before, and his mind spinning, the movie faded from view.

He’d seen boys and girls kissing. His dad kissed his mom, which was weird, but he guessed, normal. People kissed on TV, when his parents didn’t switch the channel. However, he’d never been interested in kissing anyone himself.

How were you supposed to feel when you kissed someone anyway? Seemed like something would happen that made you want to, and he hadn’t wanted to. Until now. Well, he sort of did. At least, he’d thought about it. But if he ever took that step, he’d want the moment to be right. What made it right though?

Kennedy shifted, her hand falling lower, and his eyes spread.

His mom laughed from her chair opposite. His parents were enjoying this way too much.

They hadn’t said anything when he and Kennedy walk in hand-in-hand, but he’d seen it on their faces. They wanted to, and he wasn’t sure they wouldn’t once she’d gone home. This changed his thoughts again.

Someone would have to come get her, or maybe if the rain let up, he could walk her home. That’d give him an opportunity to kiss her. He’d want to be alone, and preferably in the dark. But how exactly did you kiss someone? There had to be more to it than smashing your lips together.

The credits rolled on the movie, and his mom stood to her feet. Corey glanced toward the window. More rain. It wouldn’t happen tonight then.

“I’ll call her house,” his mom said.

She reached for the telephone and dialed. “Hey, it’s Sybil Freeman. The movie’s over, but Kennedy’s fallen asleep ... Okay and I’ll turn the light on.”

Hanging up the phone, she looked his way. “Her stepdad’s coming to get her, but you should wake her up.”

With a nod, Corey jiggled Kennedy. Her eyelids flickered, and she raised the heel of her hand to her cheek. “Is it over?” she asked. Peeling herself away, she sat upright, and the spot where she’d lain cooled.

“Kennedy,” his mom said, “your stepdad’s coming to get you.”

She bobbed her head, sending her hair swinging. “Sorry, I fell asleep. Guess I was comfortable.”

His mom’s soft smile said a lot of things, none of which she actually spoke. Grateful, Corey pushed to his feet. He stretched out one arm to Kennedy. “Walk you outside.”

She laid her fingers in his and gave a wide yawn.

The rain misted across the front stoop, filming their skin. Corey took her hands in his, giving a glance at the sky. “Maybe it won’t rain tomorrow,” he said. “You can try skateboarding again.”

She smiled. “That’d be great.
