After two days, they examined what was left of the Stardust.
The ship had brought Perry Rhodan and his team to the Moon and back to Earth. A tiny step in cosmic dimensions, a mere hop in relative terms, but it had proven to be a leap for humankind that was bigger and bolder than any other since they had left the African steppe behind them and set out to conquer the world.
At least, that was Perry Rhodanâs belief. Despite everything.
It took two days before the wreck of the Stardust had cooled down enough to allow people to approach it. They had needed those two days to recover from seeing their dream go up in flames anyway.
Their situation was, as Bull so fittingly remarked, not exactly ideal, but it was stable. The Arkonide energy shield protected them, defending them unwaveringly from every attack by the Chinese troops besieging the landing site. The generator that created the shield worked to perfection and would continue to do so for years or even decades to come, if necessary.
Their supplies were also enough to last for years. Rhodan had managed to pry them from Thora, the commander of the Arkonide ship that had been damaged on the moon. It was the same with the autonomous construction machines that worked tirelessly on the city that Rhodan had called to life: Terrania.
Terrania was to be humanityâs gateway to the stars. The capital city of a human race that no longer allowed itself to be shackled by the obsolete misconceptions of nation and skin color, rich and poor, class and social standing; a humanity whose destiny lay among the stars and not on an overpopulated and overstretched Earth.
The autonomous construction machines worked day and night while the city grew out of the soil of the Gobi desert towards the sky. However, it was at best a Potemkin Village, a mockup of a city.
Terrania was lacking people.
Its inhabitants could be counted on the fingers of one hand. There was Perry Rhodan, former commander of the Stardustâs mission to the moon, former astronaut and former citizen of the United States of America. And of course his friend and teammate Reginald Bull, who would never let Rhodan down. The two men were seen as betrayers of humanity. At least in the eyes of the Earthâs government, with an unprecedented unanimity.
Clark Flipper, the third member of the crew, had left the landing site shortly after their arrival in the Gobi Desert. Clark had gone off to seek the love of his life, Beth, who had disappeared in the Himalayas. Rhodan and Bull had heard nothing from him since then.
Clarkâs departure acted as a diversion that their fourth member, Dr. Manoli, had used to make off with Crest, the critically ill Arkonide. Nine days had passed since then, and they hadnât heard a thing from Manoli and Crest either. Did their silence mean that Manoli had managed to save the Arkonideâs life and that they were now in hiding? Or had
