The night, however, didn’t want to end.

Back in his and Hetcher’s cabin, Aescunnar took the tablet out of the transparent thigh pocket of his suit. Programmed for it, the device had recorded the abrupt flailing of his roommate in the infirmary.

Aescunnar hadn’t gotten around to looking at the translation earlier. Now he had time. As he had suspected, it was Ferron sign language. The gestures meant, I’m listening! I’m listening!

What was that supposed to mean?

He was too tired to remove the suit, instead slumping into bed, falling asleep instantly.

In what felt like the next moment, an alarm siren woke him up. He sat up, beating wildly around because he had once again dreamed of Martian monsters. Drunk on sleep, he activated the tablet and connected the station’s intranet.

Hetcher had run away again. Although allegedly stunned, the Ferron had grabbed a spacesuit, left Bradbury Base, rendered all but one of Mars mobiles useless for the next few hours, and driven away with the only remaining functional one. The station crew had been caught on the wrong foot and powerless, a pursuit having been rendered impossible.

Aescunnar knew better.

Cursing Mars, Hetcher, Homer G. Adams, Perry Rhodan, and anyone else who could come to mind, he closed the clasps of his suit and plugged in the tablet. He snuck out of the station unmolested, dragging himself to the Mars mobile, which, as if he had suspected something like this, he had parked away from the regular shelter, and took up pursuit.

I must be crazy, he thought, as the vehicle took off. Wei will be proved right. Hetcher infected me with his incurable madness.

He knew how risky and irresponsible this approach was. His fanaticism was frighteningly similar to that of Emily Tempsky; he didn’t fool himself. But curiosity left Aescunnar no choice. Deep down, he sensed that he was on the trail of something very, very big.
