Bull held Sue by the wrist and pulled her behind him, catching her when she stumbled. She was stumbling more and more often.

Tschubai hadn’t yet recovered from the effects of his jumps, and the environmental conditions were worsening his overall state even more. Chaktor was groaning. Thora was silent. As trained astronauts used to low pressure, Rhodan and Bull were coping with the thin air best. The atmosphere was as thin as at about 7,000 meters on Earth—the death zone of the highest mountains. Humans could only survive for a short time in those regions, and only after thorough acclimatization in advance.

They, on the other hand, had been suddenly thrust into such a zone. It wouldn’t take long for serious side effects to manifest. Total exhaustion. Delusions.

Sue needed a break; Bull had tried to carry the girl’s almost childlike form but had given up after a few steps. Now she was sitting there, her arms stretched backwards, her head facing upwards with a wide open mouth. Her lips were blue.

Thora stumbled after a few steps, then agreed to the repose with a silent nod. She crouched and Rhodan sat beside her.

“How are you doing?”

“Fantastic. How long until we reach a better environment?”

Rhodan looked past her to the green and blue patch deep below them. “I don’t know.”

“Give me an estimate.”

“Three hours.”

Her smile was undoubtedly supposed to look mocking. “I said an estimate, not a comforting story.” She gasped for breath. “How long really?”

“Seven hours. Maybe eight. Or ten.”

“Too long,” she said.

He nodded. Was he mistaken or was her skin, far too pale under this sun, already starting to redden? He slipped off his jacket, then took his shirt off and offered it to her.

She took it without comment, lowered her head, and laid the shirt over it so that it both covered her neck and hung over her face like a curtain.

Rhodan put his jacket back on. “Ras?”

Tschubai didn’t react. He’d rested his forehead on his drawn up knees and appeared to be sleeping. His cheeks were quivering barely perceptibly.

“I have a headache,” Sue moaned. “It’s pounding. Pounding me into pieces.”

Bull put one hand on the back of her neck and massaged her cautiously. The other, he ran across her chest, always near the heart. He looked pale and drained.

“I’ll get help,” he said. “I’ll rest up a little, then I’ll go.”

“No,” Sue said. “No, no.”

Rhodan got up. He had to fight a wave of vertigo. He saw flashing and sparks before his eyes for a moment. Then he was standing steadily. Squinting, he stared into the distance. “I’ll go,” he decided.

Thora imitated a smile. “And where’s this help supposed to come from?”

“There’s not only water down there. I think I see buildings. Streets. A settlement.”

“Naturally,” Thora said. “A settlement, as if by magic.” She grabbed Rhodan’s lower arm. Her fingernails dug into his skin through the material.

“It’s a settlement,” he repeated. “Ferrons. They’ll help us.”

Thora clawed even tighter, then released her grip. She licked her lips but didn’t say anything.

Rhodan set out.
