“I sure do wish I would have gotten some of that peppermint hot chocolate everyone is talking about.” Grady lowers his voice so only the two of us can hear. “Not that I’m complaining or anything.”

He nuzzles his nose in the spot right behind my ear—the same spot that almost had me ripping off his clothes in the alley behind Java Jitters.

We planned to warm up in the cafe, but I couldn’t help myself. I was on fire from the inside out and needed him right then, so I pulled him into the ally for a little makeout session.

“Down, boy.” I giggle like a silly little schoolgirl.

“Not happening, sweet cheeks. You started something, and we will eventually finish it.” He nibbles my earlobe before pulling away.

“If we don’t watch ourselves, we’ll be on the front page of the MC Scoop,” I remind him.

“Don’t care, babe.”

And he doesn’t. He loves with his whole heart and doesn’t apologize to anyone for it. It’s just one of the things I love most about Grady.

“Plus, I think the ladies of Mason Creek would much rather read about what they saw, or wish they saw, in that window display than a husband and wife sharing hot cocoa kisses.”

“Good point.” I lean up for another kiss before adding, “Not that I need a replay. Who needs an elf jingling his bells when I have a sexy cowboy at home to play Santa?”

“You really have a thing for guys in hats, huh,” he mumbles against my lips with a laugh.

We tear ourselves apart to look around for Jillybean, finding her a little lost in search of the perfect candy for the Gingerbread houses.

“What’s wrong, kiddo?” I call as she walks back with a bag full of candy and a frown on her face.

“I couldn’t find what I was looking for.” Jillian plops down in her seat and flops her bag on the table like it’s full of lead and broken dreams.

“Hey, Jillybean, what does Mamaw say about frowning?”

Jillian rubs her forehead. “That it causes wrinkles.”

“That’s right.” He taps her nose. “So, turn that frown upside down. There has to be some good candy left.”

“I know, but finding the perfect candy is probably worth the wrinkles, right?” Her kid logic never ceases to amaze me.

“Well, sometimes things really important to us or things we really want are worth the bad stuff, wrinkles included. But it doesn't have to be perfect all the time. Sometimes, the best things in life are a little messy. Like melting ice cream cones in the hot sun or muddy puddles after it rains.” I pull her in for a hug, and I can’t help but think about all the heartache and bad things that led me here. To her and Grady, to this magical little town that became my home, and how I almost let the fear of not sticking to the perfect plan cost me everything.

“Yeah, I guess you’re right.” She pulls back to look at me, building her resolve before dumping her candy bag onto the table.
