And so, this explication will eschew both exhaustive analysis and reductionist essentialization; instead, it will focus on three important affections which are correlated with the view of God, the kingdom, and salvation discussed earlier in this chapter. The three selected are also related to the traditional theological virtues of faith, love, and hope, respectively. The three affections, with certain attendant synonyms or closely related affections, are as follows:

1. Gratitude (praise, thanksgiving)

2. Compassion (love, longing)

3. Courage (confidence, hope)
