Chapter Fourteen

Derek hummed softly as he checked his reflection in the bathroom mirror. The tune had floated in his head since that afternoon when he watched Max and his men gather the bulls that were shipping out tomorrow for the rodeo. It wasn't complete and he didn't have any lyrics, but they would come in time. He learned early on in his song-writing career not to force anything. Forcing was the quickest way to lose the flow.

"Are you ready?"

Turning, he saw Max lounging in the doorway, thumbs hooked in his jeans and hands framing the tempting bulge Derek was quickly getting addicted to. He strolled over, rolling his hips as seductively as he could. Max's eyes lit up with lust and the man's breathing sped up.

Reaching out, he cupped Max's jean-covered erection and squeezed hard enough to make Max grunt.

"I'm more than ready."

Max grasped his wrist and pulled his hand away. Shaking his head, the cowboy shook his head at Derek. "That's not an option at the moment."

He pouted. "Your bosses won't be mad if you're a little late. They might even understand."

"They'll understand far too well." Max tugged on Derek's arm, leading him down the hall and stairs.

Derek drew up short as a thought hit him. "They aren't upset about us, are they? I don't want them to fire you because of this. I'll tell them it was all my idea. I seduced you."

A strong yank and he smacked against Max's chest. Embracing him with muscular arms, Max leaned down, kissing Derek with a firm touch. Derek slid his hands up over Max's shoulders, burying his fingers in the curls at the nape of Max's neck. He opened, letting Max take what he wanted, giving the other man all he could at the moment.

Only when air became a precious commodity did they ease apart. Derek rested his forehead against Max's and sighed, enjoying the music of his lover breathing. A quick slap to his ass broke the moment and he stepped back, rubbing the stinging cheek and frowning at Max.

"The seduction was mutual and they're only worried that you'll break my heart when you leave."

Max walked out the door and Derek had no answer to his statement. Derek feared the breaking would go both ways. His heart wasn't getting out this relationship without a few scars.

He caught up with Max as the other man stepped onto the front porch of the main house. Laughter could be heard from inside and Derek hesitated at the threshold. How long had it been since he hung out with people who weren't interested in what he could do for them? He doubted that any of the men would have a demo CD for him to listen to or a friend who wrote 'crazy good' songs.

"Are you coming? They won't bite." Max paused. "Well, they won't bite you. They might bite each other and I don't want to think about that."
