Chapter Nine

Kali stifled a yawn with her hand. Contrary to Tessa’s advice, both Gar and she hadn’t gotten much sleep during the night. She would admit it was mostly her doing. For some reason she couldn’t get enough of him. Perhaps it was from having undergone a test that could have proved fatal and surviving it. Or it could have had something to do with the diamond that hung around her neck. For whenever the pendant had touched Gar’s skin during love making, she had felt everything he had felt which in turn increased her own pleasure. No one really knew what the diamond was capable of, let alone who had endowed it with such power. All that was known about it was its ability to cause death.

With quick strokes she pulled a brush through her long black hair one final time and placed her crown on her head. It wasn’t very eye catching, but she didn’t want a crown that was more ostentatious. The plain, solid gold band that circled her head had been in her family for generations, passed down from the very first ruler of Zudris. That alone made it more precious to Kali.

Picking up her sword, she strapped it around her waist as she walked into the main chamber. Tessa and Gar stood waiting for her. “I hope I didn’t keep you waiting too long.

I want to make sure I look my best. First impressions and all that.”

Tessa looked Kali up and down. “You look perfect. I just need to make one small adjustment.” Moving to stand in front of Kali, Tessa undid her sword belt and placed it on the room’s only table. “You won’t be needing this.”

“No offense, Tessa, but I’d rather not walk into that room of vultures without some kind of weapon hanging at my side.”

“You won’t be weaponless for very long, I promise.” Tessa shot Kali a rather smug look and Kali wondered what her mysterious secret might be.

Now satisfied, Tessa walked out of the chamber with Kali at her side. Gar followed behind the two women. When their small company entered the main hall, all conversation abruptly ceased. Kali couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of people assembled in the room. There seemed to be a mix of dignitaries, ambassadors and royalty from all the known countries present along with a large number of priests. With her shoulders back, Kali kept her head held high as she kept pace with Tessa.

A large throne-like chair had been set up on a dais at the far end of the room. It hadn’t been there when she had arrived the evening before. When Tessa motioned for her to take her place on it, Kali turned to face the room before she sat down. Both Tessa and Gar took up positions on either side of the chair. Looking out at the crowd, Kali watched as one and all went down on bended knee and bowed their heads. She knew she would
