I put my cell on speakerphone, and the booming voice of Hank Werner echoed down the line. “Hello, Josh. I thought you must have died.”

“Hank, you still have my number in your contacts. I’m surprised.”

“You shouldn’t be. It’ll be there for the rest of my life. How can I help you?”

I explained everything that had happened, and he roared with laughter. “Sorry, it is funny, though. A wartime hero breaks his ankle while acting as a dog catcher. You want me to be Georgie’s protector. Her brawn if she gets into trouble.”

“Hank, it’s Georgie. Josh would never have cracked that real estate scam in Ratcliffe if it weren’t for you. So sure, I need you for your muscle, but I want you for your brains too. Are you going to be able to get away? Can you get someone to look after the business? Please feel free to say no if it disrupts your life.”

“My eldest son just turned twenty-one and moved out of home to live with his girlfriend. Claims he’s a man now. He can run the business while I’m gone. It’ll be a good test for him. Marie would divorce me if I said no; after all Josh did for us. When would you like me there?” he asked.

“The day after tomorrow would be great, but don’t make any arrangements until I call you. I need to clear it with our client,” Georgie said.
