As a college student, Anna Pauline felt the independence of being a young adult away from home and challenged popular gender norms of how women “should” look. Women wore skirts and dresses. She occasionally enjoyed wearing pants and preferred short hair. Anna Pauline shortened her name to Pauli and shared their newfound freedom and identity with close friends. Pauli blossomed and began to show the world the special, unique person they were.

During the first year at Hunter, Pauli explored New York City on bicycle, taking in all the sights of the big city. Pauli attended concerts at the Apollo Theater, a famous music hall in Harlem, part of New York City. The theater featured popular African American performers.

Pauli worked many different jobs while in college, which were not always easy to find. Again, they were faced with unfair Jim Crow laws. Want ads in the paper were looking only for white workers. At this time in the United States, banks failed, businesses closed, and many Americans lost their jobs. This was called the Great Depression. Between paying for rent, food, and school, Pauli was poor and often went hungry.

Even with these hardships, college connected Pauli with close friends. Fearlessly, Pauli and one of those friends hitchhiked from New York City to Nebraska and back—1,356 miles! Pauli was surrounded by women of different ages who were smart, independent, professional, and leaders. These women were new role models, and Pauli too was becoming a strong gifted leader.
