Chapter 10
After Luke left, Zoey stood wringing her hands in the common room, Steveâs arm around her shoulders.
âHow could he threaten you like that?â Steve set his jaw. âI have half a mind to go down to Lukeâs office and have a talk with him about this.â
Zoey could feel anger hardening Steveâs muscles. It helped steel her own nerves. She straightened and stopped rubbing her hands together. She hadnât done anything to Wayne and wasnât going to let the detective scare her. Theyâd been friends most of their lives, and Luke should know Zoey wouldnât commit kidnappingâor worse. Squaring her shoulders, she said, âEverything will be fine. Itâs a big day around this place today. Weâd better get to work.â
She caught Shawnaâs gaze on her. The retireeâs lips pursed, and her eyes narrowed. Zoey smiled sweetly, trying to deflect the womanâs concern. She looked past Shawna to where Courtney was setting up tables, getting the gist of what the social director had planned. âOrigami, anyone?â
Courtney caught Zoeyâs meaning and bustled around, gathering residents and staff to get started on the craft.
Trying to keep her mind off Lukeâs suspicion and the danger the retirement home was in of getting closed down, Zoey bent her attention toward the activity. As she set up little piles of multi-colored origami paper, she saw Shawna whispering to Maria. What were those two cooking up?
âThe meat for the taco bar is almost done, and I just have to do the chopping.â Ashley had appeared next to Zoeyâs elbow as though sheâd teleported there, making Zoey jump and put a hand to her chest. âSorry, I didnât mean to scare you.â
âItâs okay. I think my mind is just somewhere else right now. I didnât notice you walking up to me. Now, where are they going?â
Ashley followed Zoeyâs gaze to Shawna and Maria, who were exiting through the front door. âIâm not sure. Grandmother didnât tell me she was going out today. Maybe I should catch them and ask.â The chef headed after the retirees.
Zoey had a sneaking suspicion the two women were up to something having to do with either the situation with the retirement home or the one with Wayneâs disappearance. She glanced around the room and realized there were several clumps of residents with their heads bent together. They stood in groups of twos and threes, whispering. She groaned. They were definitely cooking up mischief. If she had to guess, Zoey would say they were trying to figure out how to find Wayne and prove Zoey was innocent. They were a protective bunchâthat much she knew for sure.
She scanned the groups again, trying to decide which people she should try to intercept first. Her gaze landed on Jerry and Howie. Howie was bent close to Jerry, whispering in the dark sorcererâs ear, but the fitness guru caught Zoey watching. He moved closer to whisper again, Jerryâs long hair concealing Howieâs mouth and nose from Zoeyâs view. It must have been too close for the fitness
