Chapter 10

After Luke left, Zoey stood wringing her hands in the common room, Steve’s arm around her shoulders.

“How could he threaten you like that?” Steve set his jaw. “I have half a mind to go down to Luke’s office and have a talk with him about this.”

Zoey could feel anger hardening Steve’s muscles. It helped steel her own nerves. She straightened and stopped rubbing her hands together. She hadn’t done anything to Wayne and wasn’t going to let the detective scare her. They’d been friends most of their lives, and Luke should know Zoey wouldn’t commit kidnapping—or worse. Squaring her shoulders, she said, “Everything will be fine. It’s a big day around this place today. We’d better get to work.”

She caught Shawna’s gaze on her. The retiree’s lips pursed, and her eyes narrowed. Zoey smiled sweetly, trying to deflect the woman’s concern. She looked past Shawna to where Courtney was setting up tables, getting the gist of what the social director had planned. “Origami, anyone?”

Courtney caught Zoey’s meaning and bustled around, gathering residents and staff to get started on the craft.

Trying to keep her mind off Luke’s suspicion and the danger the retirement home was in of getting closed down, Zoey bent her attention toward the activity. As she set up little piles of multi-colored origami paper, she saw Shawna whispering to Maria. What were those two cooking up?

“The meat for the taco bar is almost done, and I just have to do the chopping.” Ashley had appeared next to Zoey’s elbow as though she’d teleported there, making Zoey jump and put a hand to her chest. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you.”

“It’s okay. I think my mind is just somewhere else right now. I didn’t notice you walking up to me. Now, where are they going?”

Ashley followed Zoey’s gaze to Shawna and Maria, who were exiting through the front door. “I’m not sure. Grandmother didn’t tell me she was going out today. Maybe I should catch them and ask.” The chef headed after the retirees.

Zoey had a sneaking suspicion the two women were up to something having to do with either the situation with the retirement home or the one with Wayne’s disappearance. She glanced around the room and realized there were several clumps of residents with their heads bent together. They stood in groups of twos and threes, whispering. She groaned. They were definitely cooking up mischief. If she had to guess, Zoey would say they were trying to figure out how to find Wayne and prove Zoey was innocent. They were a protective bunch—that much she knew for sure.

She scanned the groups again, trying to decide which people she should try to intercept first. Her gaze landed on Jerry and Howie. Howie was bent close to Jerry, whispering in the dark sorcerer’s ear, but the fitness guru caught Zoey watching. He moved closer to whisper again, Jerry’s long hair concealing Howie’s mouth and nose from Zoey’s view. It must have been too close for the fitness
