Chapter 13
Knowing that Marco hadnât written the note, Paige felt worried. Her stomach did a few somersaults.
Then he offered a tidbit that didnât make her feel any better. âMaybe it was written by the dead guyâs wife or her brother.â
Paige sighed. âCharlie isnât Stacyâs brother.â
Marco tilted his head, momentarily distracting Paige as she watched his hair move. Even having been flattened by the clown wig, it was still gorgeous.
âStacy and Charlie mustâve been having an affair, and when Candy caught them making out, Stacy lied to cover it up.â
Understanding dawned over the Italianâs face. He looked at the note in his hand again. âYou should call your brother,â he decided.
She hesitated, her eyes also on the note in her boyfriendâs hand. Then her gaze moved to the white cat sitting next to her feet. Heâd been upset when she and Marco were locked outside, and he hadnât been interested in eating the kibble sheâd put in his bowl. Tilting her own head as an idea dawned, she said, âNot yet. Maybe Casper knows something.â
Marcoâs brow furrowed as he tried to make sense of what sheâd said. âBella, I know youâre a witch, but I didnât know you could talk to animals. Maybe you should have a conversation with the raccoons at your house. They seem to think that getting in the trash cans, making a big giant mess, is allowable.â
Paige snorted. âI canât understand animals, but I know someone who can.â She went behind the counter and retrieved her keys, heading toward the locked glass case where Aunt Nora used to keep the first editions and rare books along with the special leather-bound logbook. After a few steps, she stopped and backtracked, kneeling to search the spot under the counter. âThe love letterâs gone! It was right here earlier.â She looked around some more, but there was nothing there. Had the same person who left the threatening rhyme somehow gotten in and found and swiped the letter too? Now she really needed to find out what Casper knew.
She unlocked the case and removed the logbook from it, crossing the room to set it on the coffee table in the sitting area. Then she moved around the room, pulling all the blinds shut tightly.
Once she was satisfied that no one could see inside, Paige opened the book and then darted backward to stand beside Marco, who had a resigned look on his face. A green mist rose from the pages of the logbook. Paige was far enough away that she couldnât smell the dead fish odor she knew accompanied it. Sheâd learned pretty fast to get at least eight or ten feet away when she opened the book to avoid not only the foul smell but also the cold, cloying, slightly slimy feeling of the mist.
Slowly, the green steam dissipated, and Captain McDougall was visible hovering above the book. The apparition was clearly a pirate, but he didnât appear to be a hundred percent solid. He wore a black pirate hat with straps of braided leather trailing down both sides.
