The week was flying by. Jake couldn’t believe it was already Wednesday. Tomorrow they had their impromptu gathering at Maple Mountain Resort, and that meant Jake needed to get his work done on time today.

Garrett had been a Godsend. He might not know a lot about tools and hardware, but he was great with the customers, always bright and happy as he served them. In the little while he’d spent in the store with Garrett while it was open, Jake was glad to see his regulars being patient with the new employee. Summer’s brother had picked up the software so fast, Jake was thinking of asking him if he’d stay on part-time for the summer, until school came back in session.

Jake saw it was noon; time for lunch. He’d finished rerouting all the plumbing that would eventually be covered up by drywall and only needed to do a few final touches before being done on Friday. He couldn’t wait to put it all behind him. Being back on the tools and building something had been a lot of fun at first, but after a while, he’d realized how much more he liked running his own store and being his own boss.

Jake shut the suite door and saw Jessie down the hall. Her posture was off, arms crossed angrily at her chest. He heard Terry’s grating voice carry down the corridor before he saw thick fingers grab her arm, dragging her toward the nearby suite.

“You didn’t do it right,” Terry groaned, anger cutting through the air.

Jake had heard enough. He jogged now, boots clomping on the thin carpet. Carl, one of Terry’s inept journeymen electricians, stepped in front of Jake, blocking his way into the suite.

“Move, Carl.” Jake didn’t ask; he ordered.

“What are you going to do about it, Moretti?” The man’s chicken wing arms flew out, pushing Jake in the chest. He held back a laugh at the weak attempt of bravado.

Jake didn’t answer him; instead, he reached forward, grabbing the man by the collar. He shoved him to the side and stepped inside, where Terry was berating Jessie, throwing swear words out like a sailor on leave.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” Jake asked, getting close to Terry. The man wasn’t small like Carl. He had a wide face, a nose that had seen a few bar brawls, accented by a thick handlebar mustache.

“You and your team are the reason I’m not on vacation with my wife and kids right now, Moretti.” Terry’s breath smelled like sardines and coffee.

“Is that so? It wasn’t your idiots who wired the dishwashers backwards, forgot to put the GFCIs in the bathrooms, and wired the island pendants so they flicker when someone turns the dimmers to low?” Jake was ready for the blow-up, but it didn’t come.

Terry looked at him with a blank face that slowly turned red as the words dripped through the dense brain of his. “Maybe if this little number wasn’t around here wiggling up and down the halls, my boys could get some work done.
