Naomi woke to the squeeze of the hammock and the warmth of her sleeping bag. The security disappeared as she adjusted her back, and her resting place rocked wildly. Her arms flew up. Her legs scissored. “Help!”

She’d fallen asleep by the fire last she remembered, her teeth chattering so hard they probably chipped. Now, a snow-induced silence suffocated her, and the empty air surrounding her threatened to pull her out of the drowsy warmth. “Rose?”

“It’s okay.” Rose pushed her body against Naomi’s, holding her still. “I’ve got you.”

Naomi struggled to catch her breath. Her arms crossed over her chest as she froze in place. Falling from her perch in the daylight was ten times scarier than falling in the dark when she couldn’t see the rocks waiting to concuss her or, worse, the sticks preparing to stab her. So many bruises marred her body from the handful of times she failed to get into the hammock the night before that they surely printed a map of her failures on her skin.

“I can help you get down.” Rose’s eyes settled on Naomi’s face, instilling a second-hand calmness.

Naomi nodded, her lips sealed. Even with Rose’s hands guiding her, her muscles didn’t trust gravity, jerking and clenching with every movement. By the time Naomi stood, her legs shook.

She lowered her eyes. “Sorry.” Naomi studied Rose’s muddied feet, remembering her mood the day before.

“Hey, it’s okay.” Rose wrapped her arms around Naomi. “You’re okay.”

Naomi squeezed her back, and soon they rocked. Rose’s thin arms and short stature replenished Naomi's confidence. There was something about being trusted by such a small thing that made Naomi feel powerful. It reminded Naomi of the promise she made herself as she’d fallen asleep by the fire. The first chance she got, she would make things right and kiss her girl. “Are you still angry at me?” She brushed a twig out of Rose’s hair.

Rose remained silent, resting her head on Naomi’s chest.

“I wish I knew what you’re thinking. In my head, I imagine all the worse things.” Naomi pulled Rose away and their eyes met. “I really, really like you. I don’t want you to think the worst of me.”

“I don’t.”

“Then don’t be angry with me anymore.” Naomi took Rose’s chin, tilted her head, and feathered a kiss on her lips.

Rose’s brows lowered, her stare intensifying. “We just don’t know each other well enough yet. I need to think positively. I don’t care if it’s unrealistic. You can’t say things like my mom is probably dead. You can’t.”

Naomi pressed her cheek against Rose’s as she spoke. “I can keep those thoughts to myself. I want to be what you need.” Naomi’s lips brushed Rose’s ear, a question in their hesitancy. “For you, I’ll try. Now, let me kiss it all better.”

Rose smirked. “Is that a doctor thing?”

“It’s an ‘I miss the way you taste thing.’”

Rose giggled, and Naomi's other hand brushed down her side. “Okay, then. Kiss me.” Rose closed her eyes and lifted her head, going up on her toes.
