Arts and Crafts

Many toddlers, often boys, show little interest in projects involving fine-motor skills. Before 18 months, he may not have the manual dexterity to hold a crayon well, let alone draw you a picture. Or his consuming passion may be more physical right now. Give it time. When your child does pursue an art project, let go of your adult expectations; concentrate less on the finished product than on the process.

A few spare blankets can transform a simple table into a fairy tale castle.

Beaded necklaces. Cut a length of string or ribbon, or use a shoelace, which is easy for a toddler to grasp. Tie a fat knot in the end. Provide a bowl of stringable items, such as macaroni (penne and ziti are ideal for chubby fingers), wooden beads, or large buttons. Supervise your child closely if the items pose a choking hazard.
