Helminths are a very diverse group of parasitic worms, comprising thousands of different species ranging in size from tiny filarial worms to tapeworms that can reach several yards in length. An adult male and female parasitic worm of the genus Schistosoma are shown here.

Most helminths do not spend their entire life cycle in the human body. During its larval stages, the parasite may remain in the environment, or it may develop inside the body of another animal before infecting a human. The host in which the mature adult parasite lives, mates, and produces eggs is called the definitive, or primary, host. Humans are the definitive host for many helminths. Other animals that may serve as hosts during the larval stages are called intermediate, or secondary, hosts.
