Chapter Six

In the news reports, journalists said that the police and the FBI suspected that the entire event was somehow related to terrorism or the mob. With no actual footage of what had occurred and no witnesses—nothing but the dead bodies of people and a bear—everyone was left to speculate.

Isa drove her busted up car toward Salem—away from the chaos. A scarred up Luke sat next to her. His head bowed forward and his eyelids droop.

“You should rest,” Isa said to him. “It’s been a really fucked up couple of days.”

Luke snorted. Then, complying with her advice, he made his seat lean back before leaning back himself. “What should we tell your parents?”

“About what?”

He cocked an eyebrow at her.

“Oh, everything,” Isa said, biting her lip. “Well, we should probably lie.”

“Probably.”

“I met you in Bend—before the crazy mob-thing happened—and I was driving home with you to introduce you to my parents when we got in a car crash. Uh, for some reason, the nurse didn’t call our emergency contacts, and we spent the past few days in a hospital nowhere near Bend. Um…I explain that you have an abusive father, you want to move to Salem to get away from him, and because you are the love of my life, I am here to support you—but not live with you because that is way too soon for that and my parents would flip out if I said I was going to do that.”

“What?”

“Oh, it’s nothing personal. They’re just my parents—you know, overprotective and all. Plus, when young people say they love each other and want to live together, no one takes them seriously. It’s a whole thing.”

“I’m the love of your life?”

His words made her blanch, but his awed tone made her blush. It was a strange combination of sensations, and she couldn’t fully process what she was feeling. Embarrassed and unsure, she sputtered gibberish for several seconds.

Eventually though, she got frustrated with herself and sighed. Looking over at Luke—seeing his beautiful eyes implore her—she calmly said, “Yes. I love you, Luke.”

He didn’t say anything right away.

“It’s okay if you don’t love me,” Isa said quickly, her eyes focused on the road in front of her. “It’s really soon, and I am kind of weird. It’s good. We’re good. Right? Of course we are.”

“I love you, too,” he said softly.

Isa turned to him. Her heart throbbed as she stared at his happy expression. “Really?”

He nodded.

Grinning stupidly, she once again returned her attention to the road. “Well, alright then,” she said. “Good. Then you can help me end it with my ex-stalker clinger boyfriend. No blood required but he is intimidating as well. Suffocating.”

“Ah, that will be no problem,” he chuckled. “I should have met you sooner.”

“Agreed. So how are you going to explain your dad?”

“His “mafia” will cover it up. Believe it or not, there were a lot who didn’t like him. A lot of families scorned.”

“Nope, completely hard to believe.” She snorted.

“My mom will be relieved.” He gave a sad smile.
