CHAPTER FIVE

“May First, you’re sure about that?” Hannah asked.

“Yeah...why? Is that a bad day?” Jason replied.

“No, it’s fine, I just wanted to make sure that you were sure. A release date is something that you really shouldn’t change once you set it. Consistency is huge with people. I can’t tell you how many so called ‘authors’ I’ve seen who sit there and hype their books, promising all sorts of stuff, and because they can’t get their shit together, they keep blowing past their release dates, and people eventually stop listening to them. I mean, if you blew your last five promises, why the hell should we trust you with the sixth?” she explained.

“That makes sense, and it sounds like something you’re kind of...passionate about.”

She smirked. “Yeah, I guess I am. I ran into so many ‘writers’ in my life who are just fucking posers. And I don’t mean people who write as a hobby or for fun. That’s fine. Not everyone has to take it super seriously. I mean the people who claim that they are real writers, and yet they won’t fucking commit to anything. When you ask them how their book is coming, they always have wishy-washy excuses like, ‘Oh, I just haven’t felt inspired lately,’ or, ‘I just haven’t felt like it recently’, bullshit like that. You want to be a writer? Fucking commit to it, and get it over it when you ‘don’t feel like it’, and just do it, like any other job.” She paused, then laughed. “Sorry. I just get worked up over it. People like I just described, they’re one of the main reasons that writers aren’t taken seriously. That’s why I’m so proud of you, you actually fucking committed to it.”

“Yeah, I guess I did,” Jason replied.

He looked back over the past two months with something like wonder. He’d honestly lost track of time there for awhile. The days had almost lost meaning, running together, but not in a bad way. He had an idea that they’d passed as fast as they had because he was having such a good time. His days tended to be divided into two categories: writing and everything else. Everything else typically being eating, sleeping, making love with one of the women that, for their own reasons, continued to want to be around him, and enjoying himself.

He found he was doing that a lot more too, now that he was free of having to work crappy jobs that he hated.

He’d worked hard and finished the novel about a month ago, and then he’d passed it out to everyone who would read it, which ended up being Hannah, Lara, Alexis, and Kylee, and then they’d all given him their notes for suggested edits and changes back, and he’d spent the following several weeks going over everything, seeing which ones made sense, which ones he agreed with, and which ones he didn’t, and had done the rewrites and tweaks and edits, and then passed them back around once more.
