Chapter Ten

Emma absently runs her fingers along Zane's solid chest making small circles. Her analytical brain is on overdrive. She can’t believe all of this is real. How do you meet a man and instantly connect with him on so many levels?

She doesn’t want to question it, but she can’t help herself. Yet, there’s still something at the core that tells her it is real. It’s as though Zane is the missing piece to her puzzle. Nothing has ever felt so certain or complete in her life as this moment laying with him.

Zane basks in her attention, brushing the hair from her eyes. “You’re deep in thought.”

Emma giggles softly, “Yeah, I am.”

“What are you thinking about?” Zane asks leaning up on his elbow to see her.

“How impossible all of this is.” Emma shrugs never taking her hand off his chest for fear she’ll wake up from the dream.

“It’s not impossible, it’s fate,” Zane says it as a fact. “It’s rare, but it happens.”

Emma smiles and turns away from him.

“Hey,” Zane says softly, “Talk to me.”

“It’s nothing. This is all so new to me, a wolf, this instant feeling of connection…” She pulls her lips into a tight line.

“Emma, we were made for one another. Our instincts kicked in. You knew exactly what to do in the mating ritual, how did you know that?” He asks.

“I just did.” She shrugs.

“See, fated to be together. Your heart and soul knew and your body certainly knew what to do.” He pumps his brow curling his hand into the small of her back.

Emma smiles as heat travels up her neck, “Um, yeah. I’ve never had a man make me feel that way.”

“One, I’m not a man.” Zane hops up to his knees, “I’m a wolf.” He growls kissing her belly. “Two, I’m your fated mate.”

Emma giggles and threads her fingers in his hair as his lips trail up her body over her breasts. “A wolf, this is still a little crazy to me. You know, my apartment doesn’t allow pets.”

Zane looks up at her with a hint of concern, “You would want to stay here?”

“I don’t know, I mean I hadn’t thought about it.” She says pulling her lips to the side.

“I was thinking I could take you home, to our home in Duskmoon.” He studies her eyes for a reaction.

Emma inhales deeply, “I don’t know. What about my job? The life I have here?”

“If you want to stay here, we will,” Zane says struggling to hide his disappointment.

“Oh, wow,” Emma says running her finger along his jaw.

“What?” He asks.

“The thought of staying here is not okay with you.” She says.

“I’ll be okay with it.” He tries to reassure them both. “I’m not sure I’ll be welcome back anyway.”

“Why’s that?” Emma asks.

“Ryland, the Alpha, wants to exile me from the pack.” Zane lowers his eyes in shame.

“What?” Emma is filled with outrage. “Can he do that?”

“He’s the Alpha.” Zane’s defeated tone brings Emma to her feet with outrage.

She puts her hand on her hip
