‘Beneath the sea,

She lies afraid.

Beneath the stone,

She lies alone.

* * *

What holds her now

Encased in death

No fire can melt

But Arthmael’s breath.

* * *

Beneath the wave

He breaks death’s grip.

Beneath the stone,

Arthmael alone.’

‘Arthmael?’ said Pangur desperately. ‘Who’s Arthmael?’

The ripples broke, revealing half a bright eye.

‘Arthmael is joy.’

‘But where is Arthmael?’

‘Playing, of course. With those I have made for play. With the selkies, in the sea beyond Iona.’

‘Iona? Where’s that?’

‘West of the Picts. East of the Scots. The most holy island of the Hebrides.’

‘But I haven’t got time!’ cried Pangur. ‘She’ll be dead by then!’

And he buried his face in his paws.
