At times, the Saturn line, or fate line, takes over the task of a weak or disappearing life line, as shown in Figure 20.10. In this case, the Saturn line

performs ―double duty‖ and is both a supplementary life line and an indicator of career direction. The owner of this hand lived to the age of 67 and enjoyed excellent health until a few months before his death. Some palmists believe that the time of death can sometimes be shown where an influence line rising from the Venus mount crosses the life line, which would be the Saturn line in this case.

The Head Line (Proximal Transverse Crease)

Just as the life line reflects our general health and physical constitution, the head line denotes our mental health as well as the way we think. According to many observers, an ill-formed or broken head line is a signal of an impending nervous or mental breakdown. Although such predictions may be exaggerated, breaks on this line can reveal periods of severe mental stress and emotional difficulty. As with a break in the life line, a break in the head line can represent a powerful shift in the way we perceive ourselves and the world.

Dr. Charlotte Wolff studied the palms of 650 ―mentally defective‖ patients and an equal number of ―normal‖ subjects. She found that 70 percent of the mentally defective patients had faulty or broken head lines, compared to 30 percent of normal persons. She also observed that abnormally short head lines were a very common feature in persons with mild mental impairment.

The Heart Line (Distal Transverse Crease)

In our age of anxiety, perhaps one could state, as many palmists do, that the heart line is the most vital line of all. After all, many people become sick, commit suicide, and kill others because of disappointment in love. Millions die young because of heart failure. The heart line is the barometer of the emotions and reveals how (and to what extent) we give and receive love and affection. As the name implies, the heart line is often indicative of our greatest emotional trauma—the ―broken heart‖—as well as one of our greatest physical traumas— heart disease.

Unlike the head and life lines, which begin near the thumb, the heart line begins at the percussion of the hand, under the Mercury, or little, finger. It can end under the middle finger, or the index finger, or between the two. In some individuals, this line moves completely across the palm.

Ideally, the heart line should be deep, clear, and well formed, with a minimum of islands, breaks, and chains. Very often the heart line tends to be somewhat chained near its beginning, which can indicate emotional and possibly sexual turmoil, especially during a person‘s youth.

Whenever you examine a heart line and discover abnormalities, avoid diagnosing heart ailments.
