CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

TACTICS

THE TYPICAL NATIVE village comes to life before first light. Women are stoking up fires, men are traipsing to the woods, and children are stretching and cavorting by the dim light of early morning. Gabe and Ezra had saddled their horses, taking all their weapons, and started to the hilltops for their usual morning time with the Lord. In addition to their weapons, they had the ‘Sword of the Spirit’ in the scriptures to arm themselves for the day.

As Gabe crested the north butte, he dismounted, loosened the girth on Ebony and tethered him below the crest in a small cluster of piñon with bunch grass nearby. With rifle in hand and the case with the Mongol bow and both saddle pistols tucked in his sash with the Bailes over/under pistol, the quiver of arrows hung from his belt, he was loaded and primed for the day. Wolf trotted to the limestone boulders, found a flat rock and stretched out to enjoy the cool of the stone, and watched as Gabe situated himself on the promontory. Gabe used the cover of the scraggly piñon to shield himself from the view of anyone below, then sat down to string the bow. With weapons in place and ready, he faced the edge of the camp where he could see any movement on the trail that followed the river to the north, opened his Bible and sat cross-legged to enjoy the warmth of the rising sun on his back.

Ezra had done much the same as he nudged his bay near the crest of the south butte, picketed him and with rifle in his left hand, his gun-stock shaped ironwood war club in the other, and his pistol, tomahawk, and knife in the sash, he maneuvered his way to the rocky top of the butte to his chosen point on the crest. This butte had a few more scrub oak and piñon than the north butte where Gabe was, but the cover was good and the line of sight excellent. He was to watch the trail from the south that paralleled the river and the flat beyond the river, for any unusual activity. Once situated and comfortable, choosing a flat stone with a larger one behind it for a back rest, he stretched out his legs and gave the area a once-over by the dim early light. Satisfied, he pulled out his Bible and started his morning routine.

When Buffalo Tail, Spotted Horse, Half Face, and Lone Bear came to their camp the previous night, they discussed what ways the two visitors could be helpful in the anticipated fight with their enemy, the Waiilatpus. “Well, chief,” began Gabe, “when we hit their camp in the night, Black Buffalo there was painted up like a skeleton ghost, and he screamed and hollered as he danced with Wolf there. That scared the wits outta them warriors and they up jumped and ran like they was snake-bit, ‘course some of ‘em were cuz we threw some rattlesnakes among ‘em also.
