Alison rose bright and early. She had her father’s breakfast cooked and ready on the table when he came into the kitchen.

“Smells good. What do I get today?”

“It’s eggs and bacon, Daddy. Nothing special.” Alison was smiling because he was teasing her. He knew perfectly well what she had made for him.

John liked she still called him Daddy. His other children were all too old for that.

He sat down at his spot and started to eat. John had a good feeling about going back to work. Everything was falling into place.

Michelle came in and joined them. “Good morning, everyone.”

“Good morning, yourself. Look, Alison made us a big breakfast. Have a seat and enjoy,” John bragged.

Michelle sat down, and instantly Alison piled food on her plate. “Thank you, Alison.”

“You’re welcome.” Alison had a huge smile on her face.

‘Helper Syndrome’ Michelle thought to herself. She was surprised Walt and his mother hadn’t cured Alison of that when they used her so disgracefully, making her do all the work at their house.

Why hadn’t Alison grown bitter about helping, like Michelle had? Michelle wasn’t so eager to please anymore.

John thanked Alison for breakfast before he went off to work. He was in a great mood, figuring he could have left Alison alone, and she would still be here when he came back home. Alison was so much better off with him. She was finally happy.

Michelle was glad for a moment alone with Alison. She was prepared, and now she could work through her checklist. Alison cleared the empty plate away from Michelle. “You don’t have to clean up after me. I can do it myself.”

“I know that.” Alison beamed at her sister. “But you are on vacation here. If you had gone to a hotel, they would have done this for you. Instead, you wanted to spend time with me, so I’ll give you a little hotel feeling.”

“Or – we could do it together?”

“You took care of me for years. I’m sure I can manage for one week.” Alison’s smile was radiant as she grinned at her sister.

Michelle felt Alison had already thrown a wrench in her plans. Now, she was worried Alison would be offended if Michelle protested. Why was it that she knew exactly what to do with her patients when they were in her office, and two minutes alone with her little sister at the kitchen table had her questioning herself?

Alison was loading the dishwasher and adding powder in the meantime. “It’s finished now anyway. What did you want to do today?”

“I was thinking we could go for a walk. I wanted to go into the woods. Would that be okay?”

“The woods? Sure. Why not? Did you want to leave right away or wait for the ground to dry up? I wanted to start a load of clothes this morning.”

Michelle was watching Alison closely. She had figured her sister would react differently to the words ‘the woods’, but she appeared to be very cool about everything.

“Do you have enough things to wear?” Michelle recognized the clothes her sister was wearing.
