So let’s plan a timetable of which of those 32 days we want to observe and who we want to spend them with. For example, the most important days are:

Putting up the Decorations

These can be a simple or lavish as we choose and if we’re going for the ‘tree and baubles’ style, that’s fine; so is having bowls of twigs or greenery decked with that thin metallic tape used for wrapping presents. Available in red, gold and silver, there’s yards of the stuff and it can be made to curl by running it between your thumb and a blunt knife. This event can be planned for any day between the start of Saturnalia and the Winter Solstice, and can be good fun if friends are involved. Back in the summer we need to select what will be our Yule log, either in token or as the largest log we can fit into the hearth, or outside in the fire pit/burner. This is because the timber should be well-seasoned (i.e. thoroughly dried out) in order to burn well during our mid-winter celebrations. The log should be decorated with sprigs of holly and sit in the hearth until the Winter Solstice. Mulled wine or hot Irish whiskies are the order of the day, together with finger or fork food that is easy to eat.
