Manawydan fab Llŷr

Throu ghout both the second and third branches Manawydan displays his wisdom, first advising his brother Brân, then surviving the battles, and finally with his skill in crafting and patience with the local craftsmen, and the mouse-thief. Manawydan can be approached for advice in challenging situations.

His ability to learn new skills, and to figure them out from things he has seen, indicates a practical wisdom; an understanding of how things work, as well as skill in manifestation and following through on making things happen. He acts as judge when he encounters the magical thieves, but this is a demonstration of his ability to understand situations rather than necessarily about legal or moral judgment per se, evidenced by the suggested punishment being out of proportion for a mouse, and unnecessary for an act of nature. Seeing things for what they are, Manawydan acts from a place of knowing the truth in order to illuminate reality for others.

Manawydan can thus be approached for help with seeing the truth in a situation and understanding how to deal with it with wisdom. He can support the learning and use of practical skills performed to a high standard. He has the patience to allow him to act when the time is right, and the honour to not take advantage of the vulnerable, or blame others for understandable anger. These are things he can also support us with.

His name is said to reflect the Irish god of the sea, Mannanan Mac Lir, and Manawydan’s father is Llŷr, which once meant ‘sea’, so his patience, wisdom (far-sight), and skill could be rooted in a seafaring past.

Ideas for Offerings

Make something with as much skill as you can and dedicate it to him. Perhaps it is a meal, or a drawing, perhaps you could put up a shelf. Do something with your hands in his honour. Study a useful subject. Help someone else with a topic you know well (if they ask for advice).

Potential Representations

Any good quality objects used in crafting. Shoes, saddles, buckles. A ship in a bottle would combine skill and represent Manawydan’s likely roots. Objects that represent wisdom or skill to you. The sound of the sea. Sea-salt. Metallic scents. A pot of blue paint.

Vision

Ideal Location: an artist’s studio or place of craft. On top of a hill. Docks by the sea may also be suitable.

Deity Name: Manawydan

As you chant, the world around you fades and you find yourself on top of a hill sitting beside Manawydan, looking out across the land. He is making something with his hands. Introduce yourself and ask if you can learn about what he is making and why. Perhaps it will illuminate something about your life, perhaps he will tell you something useful about creating objects or plans, or perhaps it is simply an interesting object and the reason will become clear later. You can ask him for advice or for help on a project. When you are ready, thank him for his company and help and let the vision fade.
