Chapter 6 - Two’s Company…

Jade

My room was the second in the hallway. I’d always been an early riser, but after I was bitten by a werepanther, it seemed like early mornings were completely my time. Brooke sometimes woke up with me, and then threatened to kick me out of bed if I messed with her beauty sleep. Being pregnant, I didn’t think she’d kick me out, but with Brooke, one never knew.

With my huge belly, I felt as wide as I was tall, and getting from the bed to the bathroom, the bathroom to the closet, and the closet to the dining room, seemed to take half my morning. By the time I got there, it felt like most of the house was up. I lowered myself into a chair, and as always, Oscar had a large mug of tea and a plate of peanut butter toast and eggs ready for me. He also gave me a plate with fruit.

The theory was that I was building bodies—wereanimal bodies—and I should eat a lot of protein. Although I needed little encouragement on that front, everyone found ways to add more protein into my diet.

I missed coffee. I tried not to complain, but I don’t think I was very successful. I was almost done with my first breakfast when Pebble appeared. I gazed up at my sister. “What are you doing here?”

“It’s later in Wisconsin, you know that.”

“I do, but you’re a teen. You’re supposed to sleep in until noon or later, right?”

“I was hoping we could take a walk—”

My face scrunched up. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to walk—I walked every day—but she was used to the normal me.

“Like in the back yard. Can we walk to the park gate and back? I know you aren’t up to your normal distance.”

I smiled up at her. “Yeah, sure. I’m game.”

While we spoke, Oscar brought out more food. Another plate for me, and one for Pebble.

Throughout the years, everyone in the pack had tried to get Oscar to sit and relax. He did join us at times, but he loved to play in the kitchen. He once told me that he woke early—and he did. No matter how early I rose, he was always in the kitchen when I came out for coffee … or tea. But his theory was, as long as he was up, why not do what he enjoyed?

Once we finished eating, I heaved myself to my feet, and we headed out. Aunt Alison slipped from the kitchen. She smiled. “Talk to you later, Oscar.”

My mouth dropped as I marveled at her audacity. Oscar usually guarded his den worse than a dragon. “He allowed you in his domain?”

She patted my shoulder as she joined Pebble and me. “We’ve been friends for years, dear, and I’ve never been a disaster in the kitchen.” The citrus scent of her amusement wafted to me.

“I’m not that bad,” I groused.

She laughed as Pebble shut the back door behind us.

Once we’d passed the pool, my pace slowed.
