An hour later, I slipped into the back seat of the car that Petra had sent for me, my bags already in the trunk. I waited until we cleared the mountains before taking out my cell. I’d already added his number into my contacts, but wanted to be long gone before sending anything. When I felt far enough away to keep him from trying to stop me, the text I sent Matt Vance was simple.
Sorry I had to run. Catch me if you can, Senator. ~ LEGS.
Chapter Thirty-Five
A few hours later, I was safely back home. It had been five hours since I’d sent the text, and Matt had yet to respond. Somehow though, I knew he would.
In the meantime, I could give some attention to my more legitimate business enterprises. My attorney had reviewed the contracts that Petra sent and given his seal of approval. As of now, I was a 10% owner in Vallin Consulting. I made arrangements to take some appointments with Petra the next week. She wanted me to meet some of her other P.R. clients. Not everything was about sex. She also spent a good deal of time counseling clients through one corporate scandal or another. I also had my fledgling real estate business, and I had three showings later in the week.
I unpacked but couldn’t fold clothes neatly to save my life. Nora, my housekeeper, was going to pitch a fit tomorrow when she tried to repair whatever damage I’d done to my drawers. I threw on some workout clothes and was about to head out for a run when someone pounded on my front door.
I approached the door with caution after my encounter with Wallace Keane, and I pulled aside the curtain fastened to the side window. My heart settled back into the normal place in my chest as a grin split my face.
Dodger.
I swung the door open and threw my arms around him. His expression was hard, but he hugged me back.
“I missed you!” I pulled away and slapped him on the shoulder. His eyes narrowed with suspicion as he stepped inside. Something was up. He was never this stoic when it was just the two of us.
Dodger had a tan. He’d cropped his hair into a buzz cut. Standing in my foyer, he was like a stone wall, his eyes revealing nothing. He was dressed in his typical uniform – a black V-neck t-shirt that strained around his considerable biceps, and khakis with black work boots. Dodger Garrity was built like a tank and, at the moment, he looked like he was about to mow something down.
“Where were you?” he asked. There was an edge to his voice as if he were trying very hard not to shout at me.
Oh boy. Dodger had obviously figured out that Petra had sent me on an assignment without him. Although he’d know it was her decision, he and I had a different kind of bond. He was protective of me like a brother, and it went beyond his paycheck and mine.
