Where to Network: Social Media
I mentioned earlier that social media could be a great place to learn. Itâs a great place to build your network as well. I have made many great friends online who became great friends in real-life as well. That has mostly been through Facebook and LinkedIn, but I know people who have made plenty of friends via Twitter and Instagram as well.
How? You can join groups (free and paid), or seek out the types of people you might like to know and start engaging with their content. Invite them to join you on a Zoom call or phone call and get to know them. I run a membership community for talent development professionals that has grown and created many great connections.
If you are looking for a great place to start, we are building a community for just this purpose.
When networking with a purpose (like finding your next job), I love leveraging LinkedIn to find people who are already doing the job you might eventually want. You can then send them a message to ask if they are interested in meeting for coffee or doing a phone call.
Itâs important not to seem too needy, or like you are asking for anything other than their advice. Once you find the people you might like to learn from, connect with them, and you can send them a message something like this:
âHi Cindy, Iâm pursuing a career in marketing, and I noticed you have a successful marketing career. Could we connect for a virtual coffee so I can ask you some questions about your career and maybe get your advice?â
I find most people are very open to mentoring and helping others and will say yes to this type of request.
I like Facebook groups built around shared interests for just networking in general (not looking for specific advice). In 2017, I joined a (paid) mastermind group for dads called The Dad Edge, run by my friend, Larry Hagner. I made many friends over a couple of years there, and many of them are friends I still talk with regularly.
If you are looking for a group to join where you can meet other great professionals, you can check out the Own Your Career Own Your Life Facebook Group I created for this purpose. I also recommend you search groups focused on your niche or goal. There are tons of great groups out there if you look.
By posting, sharing, and supporting content about talent development on LinkedIn, I have connected with some great people, and some of them have turned into friends in real-life who I can call for any reason. One great example is my friend Kevin M. Yates, who is a speaker on measurement in Learning and Development (L&D). We connected on LinkedIn in 2019 and started to support each otherâs content. Then one day, we got on the phone and hit it off. We met in person for lunch when I went to Chicago (where he lives) for client work. I ended up inviting Kevin to speak at my conference, and we have been great friends since.
