I thought about the two-party system in the U.S. and the many speeches that flaunted one point of view while deriding all others. Propaganda seemed like a more reasonable term than speech, but the situation in Madagascar was a tangle of political intrigue in which I was easily lost without my usual landmarks of liberal-conservative slogans. I listened to their debate and Ankalazao ny Tompo with only half an ear. On flat-out stretches, I dozed, but when we neared the hills of Fianarantsoa, I awakened as the Renault labored uphill past a panorama of rice paddies and fruit vineyards dotted with stones.
