At 8:35 the following morning, Edward Steil knitted his brow as he exited his garage; the ascending door revealed a dark-green Buick LeSabre with tinted windows blocking his driveway. He tapped the gas pedal of his 1995 Lexus but stopped the car before reaching the sidewalk and tooted the horn as the garage door closed automatically. Nothing happened. A longer toot produced no results. With muscles bulging at the base of his jaw, the jeweller shifted into park, jerked his car door open, and stepped out. He wore a pearl-grey sports coat over a purple shirt, dark brown slacks, and loafers.

Approaching the passenger door of the offending vehicle, Edward Steil cupped his palms over his eyes to form a visor and peered inside. A man was reclining against the driver’s door with his feet resting on the passenger seat. A baseball cap covered his face. He looked fast asleep, drunk, or drugged, oblivious to the inconvenience he was causing. Edward Steil walked around the trunk, noted the licence plate indicating that the car was a rental, and surmised that this dozing asshole was a tourist. He moved angrily toward the driver’s door, when it was suddenly flung open.

“Hold it right there, Pop,” the teacher said in an assumed husky voice as he uncoiled himself from the seat. He wore a pair of medical gloves. A Marlins cap covered his hair, and dark sunglasses hid most of his features. A shopping bag hung from his left hand, and his right was hidden inside a paper bag pointed at the jeweller.

“There’s a gun in this paper bag,” Elliot Steil warned, flexing his wrist slightly. “I just wanna clean up your place, so don’t play hero or I’ll blow your fucking head off. Insurance claim or graveyard: take your pick.”

Edward Steil showed all the signs of a nonplussed man, but he didn’t act terrified. He thought things through for a couple of seconds. “You coked out?” he asked. He heard the click of a hammer being cocked. “Okay, what do you want me to do?”

“Go back to your car and hand me the keys. Then go straight to the porch, open up, and tap in the alarm code. I’ll be right behind you.”

Edward Steil followed the instructions as directed. After closing the front door, the teacher shook off the paper bag and revealed a .357 Magnum Colt King Cobra. The one-storey, two-bedroom house was the appropriate size for a wealthy, childless couple. Expensively furnished and decorated, it smelled nice and was very clean. Elliot inspected every room to be sure that no mistress or cleaning lady would suddenly appear, then ordered Ed to lie prone on the tiled dining-room floor. He tied the jeweller’s ankles and wrists with pieces of cord, which he removed from the plastic shopping bag as he questioned him about how the garage door worked. Using an expensive-looking ashtray as a doorstop, the teacher propped the front door open. He pocketed the gun, returned the Lexus to the garage, stripped off the latex gloves, and moved the Buick around the corner onto Wilkinson Road.
