Those Memories We’ve Forgotten

for Cedar Sigo

At 10 I was terrified when lies rose

among the blades of grass

waving their treacherous arms

and threatening

to suck the breath

from between my teeth.

At 24 the tiny animals that lived

beneath my breastbone

began to wander in different directions.

Some struggled to gain altitude

while others hoped no one noticed them

sheltering in place.

They took the warnings seriously,

wanted to stay

on the right side of history.

But what is the right side of history?

By the time I was 47

camouflage had lost its appeal.

Sun wasn’t slanted right for the shadow

I kept pasted to my foot.

We slip in and out

of the stories they tell

in our name,

fear our deepest intuitions.

At 84 none of this matters.

Earth is on course

to shed us like dry skin,

and you who are 10 or 24 or 47

must take care to preserve

those memories we’ve forgotten.
