We take a break on the couch and sip soda.

“I wonder if Anton Berntzen is still alive,” I say, and see that Wilmer still hasn’t taken off the ring. “Have you tried Googling him?”

I don’t wait for an answer and pick up my phone. If there’s one thing I can do, it’s Google. Wilmer leans toward me to see what I’m writing. He smells like sunscreen, which is kind of weird since he’s spending his vacation in a basement apartment with only one window.

I try a few variations. “Anton Berntzen + caretaker” doesn’t have any results. I try “Chaplin Court + 1960s + 30 Miller Avenue.” But nothing comes up.

“I checked the names on the mailboxes one day when I didn’t have anything to do,” Wilmer says. “I saw that one of them was Greta Brattberg.”

He looks at me.

“You know, the one who complained about the caretaker because she got shocked by the fuse box and had to go to the hospital.”

I laugh.

“I think she still lives here.”

“We can check,” I say eagerly. “Maybe she knows what happened to Anton Berntzen.”
